Dark Room

—2010—

Darkroom is based on the diary of Anne Frank. It consists of two pieces of black pig leather into which drawings were carved using a scalpel that represent two different aspects of Frank’s experience of imprisonment.

The first drawing represents the floor plan of the refuge of the Frank family. The sketch alludes to paper crafts as delicate toys reminiscent of childhood. However, the cutting has disabled their functionality. The second drawing represents the chestnut tree that Frank could see from her window. In the upper right corner of the image appear two faces representing the author herself. This work refers to various dualisms expressed through the visual and narrative technique of the diptych and the use of black-and-white as a signifier of fullness and emptiness, which in turn refers to the dualism of protection and danger.
